Download User Interface Formats

GFRMT IconBy selecting a new "User Interface Format" from the "Open Formats" submenu in GEDitCOM II, you can completely change the way you view and edit your genealogy data.

The following tables have interfaces that come with the standard GEDitCOM II installation (get the latest versions here) and extra interfaces written by geditcom.com and interfaces contributed by users. After downloading any interface, see installation instructions for where to copy the file for use in GEDitCOM II. Click the "show/hide details" to expand or contract a description of any interface.

Any user can even write their own formats using the GEDitCOM Editor. If you would like to share a format you wrote, you can submit it to this web page.

Interfaces in the Standard GEDitCOM II Installation Package

Book Format   (show/hide details)
This format displays all the information for each record in a single window and makes very little use of graphics and borders around elements. It is ideal for printing information on records. It has many editing options too, but is meant more for printing.
E Fr Sw 12 Jun 2012
Wiki Genealogy   (show/hide details)
This format displays each record in a style similar to Wikipedia. It even tries to combine your data to produce natural language descriptions of your data rather then just a list of facts. Like Wikipedia, you can edit sections of each record by clicking the various "[edit]" buttons. Since records are formatted for nice display, it is an excellent choice for printing of records.
E 12 Jun 2012
Generations Book Preview   (show/hide details)
This format displays each record in a style similar to the way it is exported in that LaTeX book creation feature of GEDitCOM II. It also has options to edit all data that enters the book and hints on how to optimize the book output.
E 12 Jun 2012
Address Book   (show/hide details)
This format is designed for editing of residence events. It is laid out like an address book and has better control of editing parts of residences then other formats. In addition, you can edit multimedia objects and notes on individuals. It is a special-purpose format with very few other editing options. You can also compile address book reports, move all individuals with residence events to an album, and export vCards.
E Fr 14 Mar 2012
Chart Format   (show/hide details)
This interface format displays a pedigree chart for each individual that is designed for printing on a single page. It also has printable charts for family groups, notes, and research log summaries.
E Fr 14 Mar 2012
GEDCOM Tab View   (show/hide details)
This format displays the raw GEDCOM data and indents each level for clarity. You can edit the contents of each GEDCOM line, but cannot change GEDCOM tags or level numbers. It is a good format for browsing GEDCOM data when learning the GEDCOM format.

Optional Interfaces Written by geditcom.com

User Interface Format Lang* Date
Basic Format   (show/hide details)
This format is designed as a template for developing new formats. It takes care of most of the behind-the-sign tasks (i.e., dealing with links, displaying multimedia, handling family links, etc.) freeing you to concentrate on the display of the genealogy data. To start writing a format, download this format, edit in the GEDitCOM Editor, and consult the documentation in the format for how to proceed.
E Fr Sw 12 Jun 2012
Empty Format   (show/hide details)
This format has no templates. It can be used to start from scratch when designing an entirely new interface for GEDitCOM II. New interfaces, however, are usually developed by starting with the Basic Format.

Default One Pane Format   (show/hide details) (Legacy)
The "Default Format" divides individual and family records into separate panes or can show all sections in its "All" pane. You can use this format instead if you prefer to always use a single pane. This format is a legacy format that works well with GEDitCOM II v1.6b3, but does not support the new features introduced in GEDitCOM II v1.7.

Pedigree Format   (show/hide details) (Legacy)
This format displays each individual record as a four-generation pedigree chart. Click the individual to edit or click other names to navigate around the file. Family records are displayed as a compact family group chart. GEDitCOM II incorporated features of this format into the Default format. Thus, tis format is a legacy format that works well with GEDitCOM II v1.6b3, but does not support the new features introduced in GEDitCOM II v1.7.

Modified Default Format   (show/hide details)
This modified "Default Format" was customized by Simon Robbins for features he wanted (and perhaps other users would want them too). For list of changes from the standard "Default Format", open this format, use "Current Format Help" menu command, and look at last topic in the contents (or scroll to near the bottom). The lastest posting has been updated for GEDitCOM II, version 1.7.

Installation

The simplest way to install formats is to run the "Download Interface Format" script while running GEDitCOM II. This script will give you a list of all available formats. Select the one you want and then choose "To System Formats" or "To User Formats" for where to install it. You should choose "To System Formats" when updating a standard script. You should choose "To User Formats" if you plan to later edit the script for customizations.

If for some reason the download script does not work, here is manual method for downloading and installing formats:

  1. GFRMT IconAfter downloading, the format should automatically expand itself into a user interface format (extension .gfrmt). If it appears instead as an archive file (extension .zip), simply double click on the file and it will expand to a user interface format file.
  2. To install in GEDitCOM II's "Open Format" submenu, the file needs to be placed in one of two places:
    • ~/Library/Application Support/GEDitCOM II/Formats: The "~" means to start in your Home folder, open the Library folder, open the Application Support folder, open the GEDitCOMII folder, and finally open the Formats folder. If you put the user interface in that final folder, it will appear in the "Open Formats" submenu in the "--User Formats--" section and will be visible only when running in your user account.
    • ~/Library/Application Support/GEDitCOM II/System/Formats: To find this folder, start your home folder, open the Library folder, open the Application Support folder, open the GEDitCOM II folder, open the System folder and finally open the Formats folder. If you put the user interface in that final folder, it will appear in the "Open Formats" submenu in the "--System Formats--" section and will be visible to all user accounts.
  3. If GEDitCOM II is already running, choose the "Refresh Formats" menu command in the "Open Format" submenu and the new format will appear in the list of available formats. If GEDitCOM II is not running, the new format will appear when you start it.
  4. To use the new format, select its name in the "Open Format" submenu.

Submit a New User Interface Format

All user interface formats are customizable by the user. Thus you are not limited to the formats that come with GEDitCOM II or are available for download; you can customize your interface to suit your own needs. The customization process is done by using the GEDitCOM Editor application that comes with GEDitCOM II. A format consists of a set of templates with instructions on how to format each possible type of genealogical data. You write these templates using GEDitCOM II's programming language. All the instructions you need are in the GEDitCOM Editor's help documentation. Customization of formats with the GEDitCOM Editor, therefore, is an advanced feature intended for users with programming experience and a willingness to learn the built-in template language and the GEDCOM standard.

One philosophy of GEDitCOM II is to allow it to be customized more than any other genealogy application. The theory is that no one interface is best for everyone; each person might have their own needs or preferences. Furthermore, the more options for user interface formats the better. If you do take the time to write a new interface and if you would like to share it with other users, you can submit it to geditcom.com for inclusion on this web page. The submittal process is:

  1. Control-click on your format file (extension .gfrmt) in the Finder and select the command to compress the file (e.g., "Compress 'MyFormat.gfrmt' ")
  2. Attach that file to an email to geditcom.com and describe the format in the body of the email.
