Main Help → Using the GEDitCOM Editor → Editing Templates
The main files you create and edit in browser styles are templates.
You create new templates using commands in the "Template" menu. You will be asked to supply a name and the template will be created in the selected section. The options are:
- New Record Editing: Enter the GEDCOM tag word for the record to be formatted by the template. Enter just the tag and not the "Record Editing" part of the name.
- New Tag Editing: Enter the GEDCOM tag word for the data to be formatted by the template. Enter just the tag and not the "Record Editing" part of the name.
- New Subroutine: Enter a single word (no spaces) for the name of the subroutine template. Other templates can use these subroutines by including them with a load command.
The new template will appear in the appropriate section in the lists of templates. See template definitions for details on the functions of each type of template. You can click on the any template to edit the text of the template in the editor window using all MacOS text editing methods. Some options are:
- Many features of the template will be colorized to help in your editing.
- The menu command "Template→Indent Commands" (⌘-I) will indent the current template by logical blocks such as indents for each conditional block. For convenience, each new line will start at the indent of the previous line to help maintain block indenting style. In templates that conditionally create GroupBox cells, the indentation may not indent well. This situation can be fixed by holding down the option key while selecting this command to disable indenting of GroupBox cells.
- To change the name of any template, double click on its name in the list of files and enter a new name.
- To delete a template, select it in the list of templates and choose the "Template→Delete Template" menu command. Note that certain templates (e.g., "_Unknown_ Record Editing" template) are required and cannot be deleted. The "Delete Template" menu command will be disabled when such templates are selected.
