GEDitCOM II - A Complete Rewrite of GEDitCOM

GEDitCOM II is a rewritten version of GEDitCOM using Apple's Cocoa environment. When done, it will greatly exceed user-interface features of GEDitCOM. It will retain the philosophy of GEDitCOM to be a customizable genealogy application for editing and viewing GEDCOM genealogy files. Users of GEDitCOM, should find GEDitCOM II easy to use.

GEDitCOM II Alpha Version Comments

Please read the following before trying the alpha version:

  • GEDitCOM II has a long way to go. A lot is in place, but some key features of GEDitCOM are not yet implemented. Comments from users will help decide which missing features are implemented first and how they get implemented
  • The immediate advantages of GEDitCOM II are
    • It is a Universal Binary application
    • All text editing allows Unicode for any language's characters
    • Greatly improved index window
    • Create albums of records
    • Improved handling of multimedia objects
    • Lots of drag and drop options
    • Infinite undo
    • More interface options (such as scroll wheel support)
    • Multiple files open at the same time
    • New features for fixing corrupt records
    • Simplified help information
    • Improved template language for those writing templates to format data. Template editing is now down in a separate application called GEDitCOM Editor.
  • Some things yet to be implemented are
    • Searching a file
    • Exporting a file to a new format (such as a web site)
    • Printing features (some simple ones are in place)
    • Marking of records (but using albums can replace marking of records with more options)
  • GEDitCOM II, as a new application, will not be a free update of GEDitCOM. It will be significantly discounted for current GEDitCOM users, and a few free copies will be offered to those giving useful input during this alpha development phase.
